Roof Replacement

I never knew roofing a home could be so difficult. My wife and I bought a 2nd home or should I say a vacation home and the roof system was in poor condition. Being the guy I am, I was thinking that I could re roof the house in a weekend. Boy was I wrong for the roof was in worse condition than originally thought.

Michelle called a local Roofing Company who educated us about the damage and decay the shingles had sustained. The skylights had been leaking for quite sometime and as a result the decking was rotten. There were new shingles on the backside of the home where a roof repair had been completed.

The valleys on the front of the home had indications of hail damage. The roof was leaking into the dining room and the Sheetrock had begun to sag. I was beginning to wonder if this was going to be a vacation home or a nightmare. Fortunately, we had got such a great deal on the home that we could afford to have a new roof installed

The Roofing Company was very helpful in helping us select the type of shingles that would suite our new home. There were many types of shingles to choose from such as Owens Corning or GAF. The Timberline style of shingles were my choice. The shingle supply warehouse gave Michelle a cash rebate for the type of shingles we had purchased.

I was on the roof top when the installation was in progress. The valleys were lined with ice and water shield which provided us extra protection. The old vents were removed and a ridge vent system was installed onto all horizontal ridge lines. We had the contractor to replace over 30 sheets of decking over the sun room. This new roof installation was expensive and exhausting to say the least.

Michelle and I have learned a big lesson from the roof project. The education from the Roofing Contractor was invaluable as well. Our focus was getting the vacation home, but in the process we overlooked a major component of a sound home.  Just as a reminder, your roof system is of utmost importance when purchasing any home. Before we purchase our next home, we will be getting a Professional Roofing Contractor to perform an roof inspection.
